Is it the car you drive? Is it the colour of your vehicle? Is it your driving habits? Or is it all of the above that makes police nervous? There are a multitude of factors that can affect your car insurance premiums but sometimes it’s simply the vehicle you drive.

Many people think sports cars or luxury vehicles like Lamborghinis and Ferraris encourage more ticketing, however, the cars most prone to penalizations are far more average, and in fact, upscale luxury vehicles like BMWs are the least prone to getting ticketed.

When purchasing or leasing a new or used car, there are some considerations to make which go beyond getting ticketed; in particular, long-term costs and insurance expenses since different car brands and their associated models are subject to higher insurance premiums, higher vulnerability to theft, and of course, higher chances of being ticketed or penalized by the authorities (See: Guide to Lower Car Insurance Rates).

The list below includes the top 20 most-ticketed cars and trucks with only two sports cars listed; the list also includes the least-ticketed cars in 2016 according to responses from over 323,349 motorists, collected from January 1, 2014 to February 1, 2016. Rankings were calibrated on car models for which more than 250 quotes were issued to ascertain a considerable sample size was available.
