Why Carry Motorcycle Insurance
Motorcycles and all terrain vehicles (ATV's) can be very dangerous vehicles. There's no steel around them to protect you from a direct hit. There aren't any seat belts either, so motorcyclists and all terrain enthusiasts are thrown to the pavement or dirt every day. Even at low speed impacts, motorcyclists and off-road enthusiasts can suffer very significant injuries, particularly when hit by a car or truck. They're not as visible as other vehicles on the road, and they're less than half the weight of a very small car.
Motorcycle insurance is required by law. Like car insurance, motorcycle and ATV insurance is broken down into different coverage's for different purposes. Each has their own premium and coverage limit.
Bodily injury liability
Minimum coverage is usually about $25,000 per person and $50,000 per occurrence. If you're found at fault in a motorcycle accident, it can pay for medical bills, pain and suffering and lost earnings for anybody you might injure or kill, including a passenger on your bike. You're not covered for any of those damages. It only covers the other guy.
Property damage liability
This pays for property damage to another vehicle or other property if you're involved in an accident that's your fault. Coverage limits are anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 depending on what state you reside in. If you're at fault in the accident, property damage liability coverage does nothing to cover your bike.
Collision
This covers damage to your bike or ATV when you're in an accident whether the other person has insurance or not. It can cover your bike even if the accident was your fault. It also covers you if you're involved in a single vehicle accident.
Comprehensive
With comprehensive coverage, your bike or ATV is covered for damage not related to an accident with another vehicle. This would include theft, fire, flooding, vandalism or even hitting a deer.
Medical payments
This coverage can pay medical expenses up to the limits that you purchase for you and your rider. It can also cover funeral expenses up to a certain limit.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
If you're hit by an uninsured driver, and the accident is their fault, uninsured motorist coverage can compensate you for your medical expenses, lost earnings, pain and suffering and permanent disfigurement or disability as a result of the accident. It might even cover you and family members who are members of your household as pedestrians or bicyclists if you or they're involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. A claim might be made on your underinsured coverage if you sustained $100,000 of damages, but the negligent motorist only had $20,000 of insurance.
Other optional and specific coverage's are available. As a motorcyclist, the risk of injury is exponentially higher than if you were driving a car, and when injured, you're ordinarily much more severely injured than the driver or occupant of a car. On a motorcycle, you'll want sufficient protection all the way around.

Why Carry Boat Insurance?
Never think that your homeowners insurance is going to cover your boat. It won't. Homes have their own unique risks, and boats have their own unique risks. Boat insurance is more like car insurance because certain aspects of boat insurance parallel car insurance.
Types of Boat Coverage
Boat insurance can cover you for anybody that gets hurt on your boat, or others who might get injured through your use of it. Property of others is also covered with your liability insurance. Damage to your own boat can be covered too if you hit something. Comprehensive coverage can also be purchased for the risks of fire, theft and vandalism. Uninsured and underinsured insurance is also available. You can even get towing insurance.
Agreed Value vs. Market Value
Like cars, some people buy new boats, and others buy used boats. Also like cars, new boats depreciate the moment you take them from the dealer. A person owning an older boat can save some money in premiums by insuring it for its agreed value. The owner and the insurer will agree on the value of the boat, and if it's rendered a total loss by a covered risk, the agreed value is what the insurer pays. Most owners of new boats will also insure them for agreed value due to the depreciation factor. Once depreciation levels off and the boat holds its value, they might convert to market value coverage.
Navigational Limits
Most policies contain navigational limits that are very broad. If sailing to Hawaii, be sure you're covered for that long open water trip. Some political and security restrictions also exist. If you're sailing internationally, be aware of those.
Seasonal Limitations
Coverage under many policies changes after October 31, particularly in the northern United States and Canada. If you're going to be on the water during off seasons, make sure you're covered.
Don't count on your homeowners or car insurance covering your boat. The risks are different, but so is the enjoyment you get from a boat.
Why Carry Cottage Insurance?
Many cottages have been passed through generations. Some haven't changed much. Cottage insurance isn't the same as it was in the 1950s though. It has evolved significantly, and it's current with the wants and needs of today's owners. You'll need an understanding of cottage insurance though, because indeed it's different than homeowners insurance.
Coverage updates
If that same policy of cottage insurance has been collecting dust somewhere, take a look at the value of the premises. Value might be established on data from the 1970s. Appreciation for many places has skyrocketed. Find out what the place is worth and insure it accordingly. Have a talk with your agent about value. That's part of their job.
Comprehensive, Basic or Broad
There are generally three different types of cottage insurance available for purchase. Those are comprehensive, basic and broad. Comprehensive will insure all perils except for those specifically excluded. Exclusions are limited in comprehensive policies. Basic is of course the least expensive coverage. It covers only those perils specifically listed in the policy. Most cottages are insured with basic policies because they're only occupied for a few months out of every year. They're insured for the usual perils like fire, theft and property damage specified in the policy. Anything not specified isn't covered. Broad coverage involves a mix of comprehensive and basic coverage. It covers the structure of the cottage, but also provides basic coverage for contents.
Liability
You'll also want third party liability protection in case somebody gets injured on your premises whether it's in your cottage or on your land. Friends, neighbors, or even cousins file lawsuits every day for injuries caused by the negligence of owners of land. You'll want to make sure you have sufficient liability insurance to avoid personal financial exposure should somebody get injured on your property.
Even broad coverage has its exclusions. Those can be insured too, depending on your insurance budget. Talk with your broker. Appropriate and sufficient insurance only makes your time at your cottage more peaceful and enjoyable.
