Property Fires On The Rise

While we all adjust to our ‘new normal’ under the COVID-19 related restrictions and recommendations of the provincial and federal government - it is important to be mindful of the potential dangers that come with increased cooking, frequent smoking in and around your home, and more frequent use of small appliances.

Ontario’s fire marshal, Jon Pegg announced that fire related deaths have increased approximately 65% over the same time period last year; unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires over the past 3 months.

Ontarians are collectively staying home to slow the spread of the virus and as a result, household members of all ages are preparing meals that might otherwise typically have happened outside of the home. Now is a great time to review safety rules surrounding the dangers of the kitchen with your household members. Review the location of the fire extinguisher or purchase one if you do not have one. Many households do have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen or garage but very few people in the home actually know how to operate it - take some time to review the operation of your extinguishers with all members of the household.

Several cases of fire have been reported in the US and UK as a result of microwaving protective masks. While there is no evidence to suggest microwaving a mask kills bacteria or disinfects, there is ample evidence to advise that the fabric and metal elements of the personal protective equipment increase the chance of microwave fires and should never be done.

Some tips to help avoid a potentially serious fire include but is not limited to:

  • purchasing a fire extinguisher for the kitchen and the garage
  • all children should have parental supervision when using small/large appliances or cooking
  • clean your oven thoroughly
  • smokers should have a safe, non-combustible container to dispose of cigarette butts
  • smoking should not occur while in bed
  • test your smoke alarms and replace batteries if necessary
  • always clear your clothes dryer lint reservoir and check that the dryer vent is clean and clear
  • do not leave candles unattended
  • do not reheat takeout containers in the microwave
